The trees that held so much color over the last few weeks are now largely bare. And with the rain last night and the wind today, the grounds crew has their hands full trying to keep up with all the leaves coming down! Take a look at our latest newsletter for more updates.
With the rain coming in for the second half of the long weekend, all the tournament rounds were played on either Saturday or Sunday morning. Based on the scoring, there was no clear advantage of playing on one day or the other. The weather both days was similar, although a bit cloudier on Sunday. Monday was a wash as a classic New England nor’easter set up off the coast.
Playing second shots without being deep in trouble is a much better feeling. Let’s help you find more fairways. We’ll start by understanding your shot dispersion width off the tee with your driver (or whichever club you usually use off the tee). The first-round matches got started last Saturday, after being rescheduled due to rain over the previous weekend.
Defending Champion, Dan McCarthy, John Taves, Ben Scott, and Tim McDonough all advanced to the semi-finals. Both Sunday semi-final matches were very close, with a winner not determined until the 18th hole. John Taves birdied the 16th and 17th holes to take a 1-up lead to the 18th over Dan McCarthy. When Dan was unable to win the 18th to push the match to extra holes, John had punched his ticket to the final match. In the other semi-final match, Tim McDonough survived a see-saw battle with Ben Scott. With the match all even on the 18th tee, Tim squeaked out the win with a bogey. A Labor Day tradition: Peter Manning Bowl and Patriot Golf Days
he weather could not have been better for our Labor Day tradition, the Peter Manning Bowl. In this 2-man blind draw, bogey avoidance goes a long way toward posting a good score. And there was no shortage of good scores this year. In fact, 14 of the 16 teams broke par, with half of the field shooting 66 or better.
It has been another quiet week at LGC. But as August turns to September, and the days start to get shorter and cooler, the fall tournament schedule begins to heat up! On Sunday, July 27th, 45 golfers teed it up for "the cause". Thanks to the tournament participants and the extremely generous donations received from members, the event raised $5,865 for the club's scholarship fund. I wish to extend a heartfelt THANK-YOU to everyone who participated in or donated to this year’s fundraising effort. Each year, the club awards scholarships to a Lexington High School golf team member and to qualifying employees and competitive junior golfers of the club. The Ladies Club Championship was played last weekend. Laura Wilczewski played some of her best golf of the season, shooting rounds of 82-85=167 to take her 14th Club Championship title.
After round 1, the duo of Jack Pawloski and Tommy Benjes found themselves atop of the leaderboard. They put together a superb round of 61 (-10). That was good for a 2-shot advantage over the team of Bill McAlduff and Tim McDonough (63), and 3 ahead of the former winning father-and-son duo of Joel and Matt Taves (64). There were also another 4 teams within striking distance at 66 or better. Take a look at our newsletter to read more: https://online.retailtribe.com/Client/OnlineEditor/EMV.aspx?n=7003747&r=3526

Due to the extreme heat this week, the Ladies Member-Member was shortened to 9 holes. The only thing hotter than the temp on Tuesday was the play of Deb Fisher and Betsy Reynolds, as they combined for a best ball of 32 (-4) and the win. Finishing runner-up with a score of 35 (-1) was the team of Chris Scott and Lorraine Gryp. Some call it “ding and donging”. Some call it “ham and egging”. But whatever you call it, no team did it better in the Father’s Day Pro-Am than the team of Lex and Orion Tzannes, and Henry and JJ Liu.
Mel Carreras was a wire-to-wire winner in the 55–64yrs group. Mel opened with a 70 (-1), taking a one-stroke lead over Steve Champagne, and a two-shot margin over Peter Donovan into the second round. But when Mel shot 68 in round 2 (the best score of the day by 3 strokes!), his final total of 138 (-4) gave him a whopping 9-stroke margin of victory over a trio of players. Steve Champagne (71-76), Steve Christo (76-71), and Henry Liu (75-72) all tied for 2nd at 147 (+5).
